- A morning-anchored invitation. Most Tamil weddings are held in the morning hours, often preceded by events the previous evening, so the invitation must separate the two days clearly.
Who invites whom
Issued by the parents of both families. Many Tamil invitations open with an invocation to the family deity or to Lord Ganesha.
Timing & dates
Six weeks or more when guests travel. The muhurtham is frequently before sunrise, so state the time unambiguously and mention when guests should actually arrive.
2026–27 date guidance
Tamil weddings follow the Tamil calendar. Margazhi (mid-December to mid-January) and Aadi (mid-July to mid-August) are generally avoided for weddings, as is Purattasi in many families. Your family purohit will set the muhurtham from the couple's horoscopes.

The formal engagement, where the wedding date is announced and a written agreement may be read aloud.
Sumangali Prarthanaiசுமங்கலி பிரார்த்தனை
A prayer ceremony honouring married women of the family who have passed on, seeking their blessing. Observed by many but not all families.
Kashi Yatraகாசி யாத்திரை
The groom sets out symbolically for Kashi and is persuaded to return and marry.
Oonjalஊஞ்சல்
The couple are seated on a decorated swing while women of the family sing and circle them with lamps and coloured rice.
Kanyadaanamகன்னிகாதானம்
The bride's father gives her hand in marriage.
Mangalya Dharanamமாங்கல்ய தாரணம்
The groom ties the thali around the bride's neck at the exact muhurtham. The defining moment of the wedding.

Nalanguநலங்கு
A lighthearted post-wedding session of games between the couple and their families.

The bride's formal entry into her new home.

- Separate details for the reception, which is often the previous evening
- Both families' names and, where observed, the ancestral village
