The sacred thread ceremony, marking a boy's initiation into formal study and his receipt of the Gayatri Mantra from his father or guru.

- A morning invitation, muhurat-anchored, and usually followed by a meal. Often combined with related ceremonies on the same or preceding day.
Who invites whom
The boy's parents and grandparents, inviting the extended family. Maternal relatives have a prominent role, and are usually invited with particular care.
Timing & dates
Four to six weeks. Extended family travel for this, and the maternal uncle in particular is expected to attend.
2026–27 date guidance
Upanayanam is performed at a muhurat, most commonly in the spring months and traditionally avoided during Chaturmas and other inauspicious periods. The boy's age at the ceremony varies by community. Confirm the muhurat with your family's purohit.

Udakashanti
A preliminary purification ritual, often performed the previous day.
Kashi Yatra
The boy symbolically sets out for Kashi to study, and is persuaded to remain.
Yagnopaveetha Dharanaयज्ञोपवीत धारण
The sacred thread is placed over the boy's shoulder.
Gayatri Upadeshamगायत्री उपदेश
The Gayatri Mantra is imparted, traditionally by the father, with the boy under a cloth.
Bhikshaभिक्षा
The boy formally seeks alms from the assembled elders, beginning with his mother.
Samidha Dhanam
The offering of sticks into the sacred fire, a practice the boy continues afterwards.
