Satyanarayan Puja

Satyanarayan Katha

A household puja performed in gratitude or to mark a new beginning — a new home, a new job, a wedding anniversary, or a wish fulfilled. Relatives and neighbours are invited for the katha and the prasad.

Where it is observed
Pan-India, especially Maharashtra, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar
Communities
Hindu families across traditions
When to send
1–2 weeks ahead
Invitation shape
A short, warm invitation. The katha has a defined start time and guests are expected to be present for it.

Who invites whom

The household performing the puja, inviting relatives, neighbours and friends.

Timing & dates

One week is usually enough. These are often decided close to the date, which is exactly where a digital invitation is more practical than a printed one.

2026–27 date guidance

Most commonly performed on a Purnima, and also on Sankranti or on a day of personal significance. Any auspicious day may be chosen — confirm with your family's purohit.

The ceremonies

Practice varies by family, community and region — not every household observes all of these.

  1. Sankalp

The statement of intention with which the puja begins.

  2. Kathaकथा

The reading of the Satyanarayan story, in five parts.

  3. Aarti

    The concluding prayer.

  4. Prasadप्रसाद

Sheera or panchamrit distributed to all present — considered an essential part of the observance.

What the invitation must include

  • The date and the katha start time
  • Home address with a map link
  • When prasad and the meal will be served
  • Contact number
